Theory (Anju Tamang)

Tzvetan Todorov analysed narratives according to the way they move forward through different stages and suggested that narratives could be broken into specific stages for analysis of their own genre. Todorov Narrative Structure is written by a Bulgarian structuralist who produced influential work on narrative since 1960.This theory is divided into 3 stages
a) Equilibrium
b) Disequilibrium
c) New equilibrium.

It can be further sub-divided into 5 stages, they are -
a) Equilibrium (The setting is established)
b) Disruption (Oppositional character appears)
c) Recognition of disruption (Tension build out)
d) Attempt to repair disruption (Point of tension after which there is a change in dynamic)
e) Reinstatement to equilibrium ( Problems solved, happy ending).

These stage are created to layout the narrative, so that it would be easy to create narrative whether its fiction or non fiction. The film has to have this structure as it builds up the layout of story. In every story, the stories begins with equilibrium where the story is built and it is disrupted by some events , resolved the problems and happy ending. It helps the audience to keep interested. With this structure you could built up tension, create doubt in the minds of the audience and answer it when you want to break the conventions.

It is not necessary that you always have to obey this structure in order, you can rearrange the order and make a story on its own way. While filming you should always have clear goals to keep the audience interested.

Facebook group was very helpful as most of the people joined the group and gave feedback. We had lot of members who are curious to watch the full length of the movie. Facebook is a best way to promote and distribute our product as it is the largest networking website for all age and socio economic groups which benefits our film. Facebook group

BBFC (Sustika Limbu)

The age range classified for our film is 15 because nowadays, we can see most of the teenagers rather than the elder people in cinemas. So, that means it's a good opportunity for us to sell our films not only to the elder people but also to the teenagers.
Teenagers love to watch horror movies, even though they are scared of it. Horror movie is something that provides them with excitement and thrills that our lives lack. So most of the teenagers are seek those excitement from horror movies. Teenagers audiences have got more power to promote a film like ours because if they like it, they would recommend it to their friends too which means more audiences will pour into the cinema.
Horror movies is not that kind of movies where, our target audience comes alone to watch it. They would come to the cinemas with a group of friends which would bring profit. We can earn more expenses from that.

Software (Anju Tamang)

We have used different softwares while creating this blog.Sound cloud
Photbucket

There were softwares which we knew how to use it and some that we didn't know. To upload our pictures and edit it we used photobucket and picknik, which we knew how to use it
BubblScribd
so it wasn't much difficult but for other post like script, brainstorm we had to use scribd, bubbl.us which we didn't know how to use it, although it wasn't too difficult. It was very interesting to learn something new. It helped presenting our blog better. We used bubbl.us to post our brainstorm whereas we used scribd to post our production schedule, production brief, evaluation, scribd and many more. We created brainstorm for the guideline of our opening sequence so that we can go back to see the things that we had planned. For editing we used softwares like Finalcut Pro and Soundtrack Pro. It take us while to learn it but now our editor has learnt it, she is confident enough to use it and edit our opening sequence. We used Finalcut Pro to log and capture our opening sequence as well as edit our sequence.
Finalcut Pro

We used Soundcloud to upload score music and post in or blog.

We learnt about different software and tried to use it as much as we could so that it would present our blog better.

Audience Research (Anju and Sustika)

Audience is a group of people who participates in different events. Audiences participates in different ways in different art; eg there are some audiences who are invited to participate in events which allows only clapping.

Media audiences are those who are interested in media products. Audience theory observes the knowledge of how audience affect and are affected by different form of art.

An audience can be people of certain age, gender, group or ethnicity. Now-a-days most of the media market targets the audience of both gender who are aged 15 and above. Without discovering the correct target audience advertisement and selling the product is useless as it takes lot of effort and becomes difficult to understand it. Most of the companies tries to attract mass audience.

Inspiration for Opening Sequence (Sustika Limbu)

We got a videos through Youtube.

Soundtrack

Film: The Grudge (Japanese Horror)
We were inspired by unique and fear producing sound but we didn't used it in our movie because we weren't able to get hold of this sound.

Film: (Ringu) Japanese Horror

Film: (Ringu) Japanese Horror

We were inspired by these two soundtrack from a Japanese movie called Ringo because it slowly builds emotion of fear and keep us on edge when the scary scene reaches it's peak.

Scene from a horror film.

Film: Coming Soon (Thai Horror)
We were inspired by this scene because it is completely different than any other horror movies.

Film: A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean Horror)
We were quite inspired by the way director has used the different mise-en-scene and cinematography in the scene.

We posted our movie on youtube and our blog. We had a very good respone about our video we got various feedback from it. We changed the title of our movie from "A Girl in White" to "Cherry Blossom" because "A Girl in White" sounded common and meaningless.

Filming Journal (Tilly Trinder - Director)

Monday 8th of February 2010

Originally, it was not our plan to film today but as we had our full cast and crew, we took the opportunity to plan everything and to get familiar/comfortable on set and with the camera. We took advantage of this situation and filmed some footage of 'Sakura' along the corridor, which benifitted myself as the director and Anju, the camera woman. We then log and captured the footage and made a rough edit of the corridor scene. The editing made it seem that 'Sakura' vanished and appeared in different places all along the corridor. This rough edit, will not be used in our film, as adjustments in the props and make-up will be made. However, we all look at this as a learning experience for when we put it all into practise, we will be well prepared.

Tuesday 9th of February 2010

Today we almost shot our entire film, in the space of less than two and a half hours. We worked well as a team, as there was a lot of determination and dedication from the actors and crew. Whilst filming, we had to consider the angles and camera positioning, as we did not want to re-shoot.

It made things a lot easier considering that I was starring in the short sequence as, I could portray the character as my group and I had invisioned it. In doing this, we filmed a majority of the sequence in a short space of time, without seeming to rush anything. This was mainly due to our detailed preparations and organisational skills, also our longing to achieve the best grade possible.

Thursday 11th of February 2010

Today, we had to shoot the last bit of footage needed. Which was simply two people walking along a corridor, looking in on Jeniffer being locked in the room. This took a matter of 10 minutes. However, we did have to consider the issue that, we could not have any windows visible, as our previous shooting date was shot during the evening and today we shot during the afternoon. This meaning that there would be a difference in the lighting through the window.

Thoughts of the filming process

Overall, I felt that the filming process was a success, as we all worked well in our assigned roles within the group. As the director, I felt that I benifitted from this role and learnt what is expected of a Director. My role, was to oversee the WHOLE process, so I am now aware of how to set-up the equipment and how to use the apparatus. At the same time, I also began to get familiar with the editing process. In doing this, I had to become observant of the shots/angles and positions, the shots that we did use were effective in connoting our message within the film. The plannning and preparation played a large part in our success as a group, so as a whole I feel that it went well.

Meeting minutes (Tilly Trinder)

Title Sequences (Tilly Trinder)

According to wikipedia, 'a title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members or both utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. It usually follows but should not be confused with the opening credits, which are generally nothing more than a series of superimposed text'. From this extract, I have learnt what a title sequence entails and how to use it within a film.

After this, I thought that it was necessary that I do a comparison of different films and their title-sequences, making notes on the order that the editor and director chose. I analysed three different sequences, in order to do a fair comparison, the films also varied; classic horror (dracula), new horror (drag me to hell) and asian horror (the grudge). This was to see how the title-sequence varied, if they varied.

DRAG ME TO HELL:
-Logo
-Presents ..
-Title
-Cast
-Casting by
-Make-up
-Co-producers
-Visual Effects
-Music
-Costume
-Editor
-Production Designer
-Director of Photography
-Executive Producer
-Producer
-Written by..
-Director

DRACULA:
-Title, A Film by..., Authors, Producer
-Associate Producer, Script, Editor, Art Director, Cinematographer
-Director
-Cast members

THE GRUDGE:
-Logo
-Production
-A Film by...
-Title
-Cast members
-Casting
-Music
-Editor
-Production designer
-Director of Photography
-Co-Producers
-Executive Producers
-Producer
-Director

During the title sequences, there was eerie music that was played throught out and the film began with the continuation of the sequence. From these notes made, I think for our 2 minute short sequence, the logo should appear first then the film begins and titles appear throughout.

Costume Notes (Sustika Limbu)

For Sakura(ghost) we had used a plane white dress and a long plain t-shirt to give her looks like a Japanese horror antagonist.
As for Jennifer we had used a simple stripe shirt and a long black skirt with a funny looking shoe to give her a more geeky look.

Character's Makeup ( Sustika Limbu)

Ghost look

We used basic make up for our ghost. We wanted her to look lifeless. To give her skin more pale complexion, we used foundation, a plenty amount of powder, red lipstick and a eye liner to make a dark bruises.
Because the character has been dead for an ages and instead of showing bruises reddish we had tried to make it look more black.
Considering the importance on the physical portrayal of ghost, we took more care to give her vulnerable look by applying make up on her neck.

Thursday 4th of February 2010 (2 Hours)

During this lesson, we worked on individual tasks and made the final preparations for our two minute sequence. This mainly consisted of call-sheets and actor release forms.

Thursday 4 February 2010

Score Music (Sustika Limbu)

We have chosen to use minimal sound effect in our film. As film progresses, the sound generates the feeling of fear. The scene and sound in our film blinds well with each other, as audience experiences fear at the same time due to the sound effect.

Location Notes (Tilly Trinder)

FIRST LOCATION

REASON: The reason for choosing such place, Photobucketis due to the claustrophobic feel, thus giving a feeling of being trapped. This corridor is in a college/high school environment, which connotes a young generation of people/characters. We also chose this location, as in many Horror films a chase scene almost always takes place in a corridor, therefore following the stereotype.

SECOND LOCATION
PhotobucketREASON: The radio room is associated with being very technical, this relates to our character, as she goes with the stereotype of being a geek. Technology; computers and other hardware is usually associated with Nerdy characters. As well as compatability with characters, the room is ideally spaced with the ability to move around, to escape the antagonist.

THIRD LOCATION

PhotobucketREASON: This location is suitable for a place to hide from the antagonist, as it is easy to access and spacious with the connotations of being dark/mysterious. It is also an area, which wouldnt be too complicated for the camera person to operate.

FOURTH LOCATION
Photobucket This corridor varies from the previous, as it is more spacious, which gives a sense of freedom connoting the characters hope and desperation. The many doors indicates that the character is lost and unsure, possibly confused.

FIFTH LOCATION
PhotobucketThis is similar to the previous location, a it is in fact a continuation of the corridor. It is in fact different, as it shows the antagonists 'own space', a place where she 'rules'.

Treatment (Anju Tamang)

Product:
The product our group has chosen is 2 min opening sequence of a horror genre "Cherry Blossom". We aim to market it through advertising it in blogger, facebook, hi5 and youtube because this is the easy way to connect to our target audience as most of the people uses this websites to update their social network. With the use of this websites we can get feedback from our audience.

Target Audience:
We aimed to target audience of 15+ and socio economic group C1-E for our film because the characters are reflected to our audiences. We aim to target mass audience

Context:
Our product will be viewed on different platforms like horror zone and the famous website in asia called Asian-horror-movies.com. Most of the teenagers watch horror zone as they love watching horror movies. We can promote our film through newspapers, radio and internet as it is the easy way to promote it and most of the people go through this medium daily.

Media Language:
Within our opening sequence we are going to use editing techniques with cinematography elements to convey the emotions and movements of the film. As in the beginning of the film while the victim was locked up and her classmates passed by we kept different shots together to convey that the victim is locked and her mates are ignoring it.

Institution:
Our production logo is called Lightning. Our product will be distributed across the world through internet and its medium like youtube, facebook which enables us to target our audience easily.

Representation:
Our product represents our character as stereotypical Jennifer the victim is represented as loner, weak, defenceless where as the antagonist is represented as violent, evil.

Genre:
Within our 2 min opening sequence we planned to stick on typical horror conventions such as the antagonist winnig and still alive in protagonist, the location which gives the claustrophobic a feeling of being trapped which helps create enigma raise. Another convention we will be using is "antagonist vs protagonist" where protagonist wins but for a short period of time, and eventually realizes that the antagonist has won; this will be shown in our 90 min featured film.

Cast Notes (Sustika Limbu)

Sakura
Real Name: Devika Sherma

For our film we needed someone who is not so skinny nor chubby and Devika was perfect for the character. So, we decided to choose her as antagonist of our film. Her long hair and a pale skin which is idol to our character makes her complete package.

Jennifer
Real Name:Tilly Tinder

For this role, we needed a girl who has got a innocent face and a good knowledge on acting. Because not all people can act and carry an innocent look like Tilly does. So, we decided to chose Tilly as protagonist. In addition, she is doing drama which makes her perfect character that the role demands.

Shot List (Anju Tamang)

180 Degree Rule (Anju and Sustika)

The 180 degree rule is a cinematographic guide line which means that the two characters should always have the same left-right relationship to each other. When filming we shouldn't cross the line of vision, which is an invisible line that has been established during the 1st shot. If we don't use 180 degree rule it will confuse the audience as the character's places are switched. For eg. if two characters are having conversation we should us 180 degree rule otherwise it confuses the audience. Although many director's crosses the line to create the fact.

We have used 180 degree rule in our Preliminary task which helped us to understand the rule better.
